More than 40 years ago, history was being made when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the initial play screenplay for Les Misérables (previously in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s late book of the matching title, Les Misérables was adapted and turned into a live stage adaptation performed as a fully sung-through show, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that time period.

After a very short run in France, there was evidently great clamor to produce a more accessible version, and once Cameron Macikintosh listened to the musical score, he instantly fell in love and agreed to write an English version hand in hand with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who composed the new songs. The English version of the musical at first debuted with a two-month run at the Barbican Centre, but as a result of its impressive success and larger audience with the English version, the show rapidly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in 1985, a significantly more superior location, and was performed for 19 years. The musical then transferred once more to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which one day remade and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until today. If you include all its runs since its inception in 1980, Les Misérables is as it happens, the longest-running stage play so far in this generation.

With 37 years in West End on its own and not even enumerating its productions in international locations, including and definitely not limited to its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is incontrovertible that Les Misérables perseveres and is epic in the viewpoint of the play's audiences. The narrative and the fully sung-through score, which revolves around justice, passion, and selfless love, always brings each viewer to tears due to the revealed heart beneath the surface of each character and act performed. Les Misérables has become so successful that it has been adapted to motion pictures repeatedly and has been met with glowing reviews even on a different medium.

This coming January’s run of Les Misérables brings it to Ohio, where the show will be hosted on Wednesday 15th January 2025, in Procter & Gamble Hall at Aronoff Center, Cincinnati.
