The show, Back To The Future, a stage play that was long overdue, was conceived back in 2005, when the wife of one of the creators, Zemeckis, was said to be excited about the idea of the film being adapted for the stage. The musical was ready to debut in 2015, as an allusion to the second part to the first movie (which was released in 1989), however the musical was delayed unintentionally and eventually premiered at the Manchester Opera House, then subsequently transferred to London’s Adelphi Theater after the COVID outbreak.
The musical, despite a small number trivial tweaks, shows the sci-fi narrative of Marty McFly as he discovers transtemporal travel to 1955, where he meets the younger versions of his friends and family. Furthermore, because of the wiggle room of live performances, the adaptation was free to establish its own identity that vastly leveled up the musical. Both visually and audibly, the vibrant show has awe-inspiring execution. The lively show utilizes the most advanced equipment available in Broadway and makes the whole set feel alive, with the set fabrication, lighting design, audio direction, and backdrop animations all unifying one another quite well. The DeLorean as an example, (which is the time-traveling car that is central to the plot) the moment it is introduced in front of you, became an unforgettable moment that viewers have enthused over.
Looking specifically at the backdrop editing, the groundbreaking musical also undoubtedly is on another level. Animation editor Finn Ross uses 3D animation quite well that each onscreen video serves as a complementary component that blends with the live sets seamlessly. Ross also reveals how in each animation “There’s nothing real in there at all. Sometimes the team did consider tangible locations, but the production wanted to get this slight nostalgic feel to go with the level of vibrancy the show is already on.”
